1962 VW camper - 1:18 Die Cast Model - own an icon!
The Volkswagen Camper - the original RV
This Type 2, known officially (depending on body type) as the Transporter, Kombi or Microbus, or, informally, as the Bus (US) or Camper (UK) was introduced in 1950 by the German automaker, Volkswagen as its second car model. It's first model, the Type 1 was the VW Beetle.
As one of the forerunners of the modern cargo and passenger vans, the Type 2 gave rise to "forward control" other vehicles - with a cab ahead of the payload as opposed to car/caravan combinations.
Like the Beetle, the van has received numerous nicknames worldwide, including the "microbus", "minibus"and, because of its popularity during the 1960s movement of the same name, Hippie van/wagon. It still remains iconic for many hippies today!
The last factory in the world that produced the T2 was in Brazil. Production ceased on December 31, 2013, due to the introduction of more stringent safety regulations in the country. This marked the end of an era with the rear-engine Volkswagens.
